Rihanna 'Weirded Out' By Her American Accent In 'Battleship'

Singer says the finished film is of a 'completely different magnitude' than what she expected.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Given the colorful theatrics Rihanna employs in her stage performances, music videos and personal style, it's difficult to believe that her first-ever movie role is in this summer's "Battleship". The Caribbean-born singer admitted that filling her in the Peter Berg-directed film made her nervous in the beginning.

"I had trepidation. It was my first film, and I was coming into an environment full of professionals so I had to keep up," Rihanna said during our "MTV First: Battleship." "There were also real [military] vets on set, [who were] a part of the film, so you're definitely [minding] your P's and Q's at all times, you don't want to do anything that was disappointing to their customs."

Being back on the USS Missouri (where they filmed scenes for the movie) for "First" reminded the singer of the nervous energy she had on set.

"The butterflies, that nervous feeling I have being here again," she said. "You're not comfortable, you have to be alert all the time."

So the big question: What did the singer/actress think when she saw the finished film and her performance for the first time? "I was extremely blown away," she said. "I hadn't expected anything like that, because you have to create it in your mind, everyone had their own idea of what it would look like and seeing it back, it was a completely different magnitude. I definitely was weirded out in seeing myself onscreen, and hearing myself speak in an American accent," she admitted. "It was weird but cool I think."

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

Giant panda?s artificial insemination: National Zoo tweets procedure

Mei Xiang, a 13-year-old giant panda, at the National Zoo. (AP)

Every wonder what a giant panda's artificial insemination is like? If you followed the National Zoo's Twitter feed on Monday, you found out, in startlingly vivid detail, tweet by tweet.

The Washington, D.C., zoo turned control of its Twitter feed over to Dave Wildt, head of the Center for Species Survival, who "live-tweeted" the insemination of Mei Xiang, a 13-year-old, 230-pound panda at the zoo. (The procedure actually took place on Sunday night, but the zoo still billed Wildt's updates as "live.")

Using the hashtag "#pandaAI," Wildt provided a steady stream of cheery tweets--including photos--as Mei was filled with thawed sperm.

"It's an exciting day!" Wildt wrote. "It only takes one!"

There are just 1,600 pandas left on earth, he added, which is why they are hoping to get Mei to produce a cub.

Here are a selection of tweets from the two-hour event:

Ready to go! #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/bBswnTQf

The microscope is set up, the pipettes are ready and the slides are prepped. A little more to do until we'll bring in Mei Xiang. #pandaAI

Here's Mei right now. Volunteers are watching her from our research station as we prepare. #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/5hHmOApC

There are 15-20 of the Zoo's scientists, animal keepers and vets in the room, waiting. Lots of equipment. #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/9PbIC3z5

Last night we couldn't get quality sample from Tian, so we used a frozen sample from 2005, the year Tai Shan was born! #pandaAI

Today we're using the same process using the "vintage" sperm. #pandaAI

Now we have to get Mei ready. #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/9Sfk5P1Q

Mei is wearing a blue mask to get anesthesia. The vets are monitoring her heart rate and blood pressure, too. #pandaAI

Dr. Desheng and Dr. Comizzoli are inserting a thin tube about 12 inches into Mei filled with sperm. #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/kRtzob5r

They use .25 mL straws of sperm. That's a total of 1.5 mL of sperm, or up to 800 million motile sperm in the sample! #pandaAI

Sperm frozen in 2005 from Tian Tian, our male giant panda, had good motility (lots of swimming). #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/Uq92D83d

One of our repro experts, Dr. Aiken-Palmer holds the next vial of 100,000 million sperm. "It only takes one!" http://pic.twitter.com/t4i0XLv4

They shifted the table and are positioning Mei's head lower than her pelvis. Gravity's important here. #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/khzSLzPc

Yesterday Mei and Tian Tian, our male panda, got to spend some time together?this is the only time of year they are put together. #pandaAI

When Mei and Tian are feeling the love, they bleat and chirp. This is one of the behavioral signals keepers track for breeding. #pandaAI

We're keeping Mei elevated for 10 minutes. We used 10 straws of sperm. #pandaAI

Female giant pandas can only breed during a short 24-72 hour window each year. #pandaAI

We've been monitoring Mei's hormones and watching the panda behavior for months now to determine the best time for an AI. #pandaAI

When I got the phone call that now's the time, I dropped everything to get to the Zoo, just like everyone else here! #pandaAI

This is the 8th year we've artificially inseminated Mei Xiang. #pandaAI

It's done! The keepers, vets and researchers had to move fast to carry her! But here they are! #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/QJVKVMXw

Mei did great and there's a sense of celebration and accomplishment in the air here! #pandaAI

Pandas experience delayed implantation, which means the embryo doesn't latch onto the uterine wall immediately. #pandaAI

Our vets will do ultrasounds, but because the cub would be so small, we wouldn't necessarily see it until one week before birth. #pandaAI

We'll know later this summer whether she's pregnant or if she experiences a pseudo, or fake, pregnancy. #pandaAI

And here's our slightly groggy, black-and-white rock star in recovery! #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/a1FAPJfh

"We hope you learned something," Wildt tweeted following the procedure.

Trust us, doc, we did.

Cyber Crimes and the Law | Criminal Law information

Defining Cyber crime is not so simple and perhaps that is why there has not been a single definition that is collectively approved by all the law enforcing bodies. However, the below mentioned definition is a commonly accepted and generally used definition by Various US law enforcing bodies:

?A criminal offense in which the computer is involved as an object of crime or as a tool for committing an offense?s material component.?

If you find yourself under criminal investigation for cyber crime then you should definitely seek legal advice. It is always better to have some knowledge about the law and crime that you are dealing with in order to save yourself from any unjust or undeserving sentences. Further, it will help you in avoiding any activity that may break the cyber law and put you in trouble.

Some of the most common and well defined internet crimes are:

    • Child pornography: Online predators targeting children are in the top hit list of FBI. Child pornography is considered a very serious crime and even the possession of one such picture can land you in prison for five years. According to 18 U.S.C 110, Sexual Exploitation and Other Abuse of Children, the punishment for such a crime can be up-to 15 years in federal prison.
    • Cyber stalking: Like the stalking in the real world, people can also stalk others over internet. Cyber stalking falls under the category of harassment and is a punishable offence.
    • Scams and fraud: Fraud is actually a very broad term and covers a lot of different actions and activities. Basically, these crimes are dishonest acts which are done in order to gain monetary benefits.
    • Trademark violations: Like it sounds, the trademark violations are those crimes where the registered trademark of one business is used by some other third party over the internet, with or without intent.
    • Copyright violations: Copyright violations are perhaps the most common online activity. Copying content from any other source on the internet and using it for personal purpose without citing and linking to the source is considered as copyright violation.
    • Computer and network hacking: These are the cyber crimes which are related to computer as well as network dealings. Such crimes include hacking, website defacing, creating and distributing computer viruses maliciously etc.
    • Credit card hacking: Credit card hacking also falls under fraud cases but it is now a very common crime therefore we would point it out separately. The credit card information of users is retrieved and hacked by unauthorized personals who intend to use it for personals gains.
  • Bank account hacking: Just like credit card hacking, the bank card hacking also involves access of bank account information of users. This information is then usually used for transferring funds to other accounts.

The first law against cyber crime was enacted in 1984 and was called ?The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act?. CFAA is the most important computer statute in US as all the other statutes concerned with above problems come by modifying the CFAA.

Further, in 1986 ?Electronic Communication Privacy Act? was enacted which actually was an amended version of wiretap law. According to this law, intercepting, using, accessing or disclosing of transmitted or stored electronic communications without authorization is illegal.

Now that you know something about cyber crime and law you can avoid situations where you can be accused of cyber crime. Further, if you have any doubt or confusion then you can ask legal questions to cyber law attorneys over internet for free and clear all your doubts. It is always better to be informed than make mistake and then regret.

Fight or flight: Violent teens may be following parents' lead

ScienceDaily (Apr. 29, 2012) ? While it may be cute when a 3-year-old imitates his parent's bad behavior, when adolescents do so, it's no longer a laughing matter.

Teens who fight may be modeling what they see adult relatives do or have parents with pro-fighting attitudes, according to a study to be presented April 29, at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Boston.

"Parents and other adults in the family have a substantial influence on adolescents' engagement in fighting," said Rashmi Shetgiri, MD, FAAP, lead author of the study. "Interventions to prevent fighting, therefore, should involve parents and teens."

Dr. Shetgiri, assistant professor of pediatrics at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Children's Medical Center, Dallas, and her colleagues conducted 12 focus groups with 65 middle and high school students to discuss why youths fight and how violence can be prevented. Groups were divided by race/ethnicity and whether students were fighters or nonfighters based on self-report.

Youths said they fight to defend themselves or others, to gain or maintain respect, to respond to verbal insults or because they are angry due to other stressors. Girls also cited gossip or jealousy as reasons for fighting.

The discussions showed that parental attitudes toward fighting and parental role modeling of aggressive behavior influence youth fighting. Family attitudes also may prevent youths from fighting. Many Latino students, for example, noted that their parents condoned fighting only when physically attacked and said not wanting to hurt or embarrass their parents could prevent them from fighting.

Peers also can have a positive or negative influence on fighting by de-escalating situations or encouraging violence.

The conversations also revealed that nonfighters use various strategies to avoid confrontations such as walking away, ignoring insults or joking to diffuse tension. Fighters, however, said they are unable to ignore insults and are aware of few other conflict-resolution methods.

Potential interventions suggested by youths include anger and stress management programs led by young adults who have overcome violence, and doctors counseling youths about the consequences of fighting.

"Our study suggested that there may be differences between boys and girls, and racial/ethnic groups in risk and protective factors for fighting," Dr. Shetgiri concluded. "This has important implications for violence prevention programs and individuals working with violent teens."

Presentation Development Services: Things You May Not Know

Are you aiming to build a business presentation soon and need to impress you audience? Most displays are notorious for being long-winded, choked with fluff, as well as, uninteresting. How does one build yours stand out? Are there full-proof ways that to make attention-grabbing displays each time? the solution is, yes. Here, we tend to list a number of the suggested practices for effective business displays. Bear in mind that what you're attempting to try and do once you gift your material is to sell one thing ? be it a product or an inspiration. Once you are awake to this primary purpose, everything else can fall into place eventually. In this respect, effective business presentations development services are quite important.

The first issue to recollect is that you just have to be compelled to outline your objective.

What are you selling? Certify that every purpose is controlled in barely the maximum amount detail as won't bore your audience. Generally it's unfeasible to induce a thought of all the fabric as you're pressed for time. Currently several agencies can do sensible business PowerPoint displays that perceive your subject and frame it how you wish it to be framed.

Make certain to own the most essential on every slide, solely, you are doing not wish to litter it thus your message gets lost. Ultimately you may be there, or another person presenting the fabric; therefore, the slide ought to complement what you may be saying, and intensify the bottom you may be covering. Readability is extraordinarily necessary, thus select your font well. You would possibly assume flashy colors would do the work of capturing audience attention, however, attempt not to resort to those gimmicky ways in which because the audience ultimately gets postpone by fancy animations and fonts because the human eye tries to concentrate on what's happening, on the screen.

Keeping it straightforward, clean, and meaningful is an initial step for business displays.

Check that you just will scan what you're presenting. And don't build the error of getting capitalization everywhere to fret small print. This work well in print to focus on one thing crucial, however, presentation slides, projected on an out sized screen, are a special beast. The message that the audience can get once you have capital letters in your slides is that you just are shouting. Keep in mind that the projector amplifies everything within the slide, thus, not like print during which you have gotten to focus on the key parts, in slides, the secrets to be delicate and understated to urge your message across.

Another good way to speak any material in an exceedingly slide is to use tiny doses of humor. Light-weight touches of fun will enliven your presentation, create it sound am fond of it is returning from a personality's and provides it a definite temperament. The necessary issue is that the audience ought to connect with it as they might with an individual speaking.

These are a few of our recommendations, keeping in mind these suggestions will help you draw up effective business presentations development services.

To get out of debt, refinance and consolidate first

The most painful part of debt is the interest, which can be crushing. Refinancing to reduce interest rates can make a world of difference.

Let?s say you borrow $200,000 on a 30 year fixed mortgage at 6%. That?s a pretty typical home loan that someone might have taken out in the mid-2000s if they had decent credit and a down payment.

Over the course of that loan, you?d have to pay back the $200,000, of course. You?d also have to pay back $231,676.38 in interest.

To get that $200,000 home, you?d have to pay a total of $431,676.38 to the bank.

Now, let?s say you were able to refinance that loan down to a 4% loan, something that you could actually get in today?s market. You do that refinancing at the 4 year mark into a new 30 year loan.

Over the course of those two loans, you?d have to pay back the $200,000, but you?d only have to pay back $182,783.91 in interest. You?re saving almost $50,000 by refinancing. You?re also trimming your monthly payment by about $70, though you are adding a few years to the length of it.

That number gets even better the earlier you can refinance and the bigger the change in interest rate when you do so.

A similar tactic comes in the form of loan consolidation, often seen with student loans. Many lenders will happily consolidate several of your student loans into a single loan, often chopping interest rates.

If you have a $30,000 loan at 7% over ten years and a $20,000 loan at 9% over ten years and you find a lender to consolidate those loans into one loan of $50,000 at 6% over ten years, you save $5,588.94 just because of one simple move. You?ll also have reduced your monthly payments by about $45 per month.

Refinancing debts can have a tremendous impact on the amount of money you pay, both on a monthly basis and on an overall basis. Saving $50 a month can turn an unworkable situation into a workable one, or turn a situation where you?re making no debt progress into one where you can start chipping away at your credit cards.

Home mortgages and student loans are two of the most common types of debts you can refinance, but you can sometimes refinance other debts as well. How? We?ll discuss that tomorrow.

E. J. Masicampo, a psychologist at Wake Forest University, studies implementation intentions. These plans take a specific ?if-then? form, such as ?if I am near a phone, then I will call my mother.? In the experiment, he gave volunteers a number of tasks to complete online and asked them to remember to look up actor Bill Murray?s birth date when they were done. He instructed some subjects to make an implementation intention to look up the date at a movie-themed Web site, IMDb.com. These individuals were much more likely to remember to do it, underscoring the power of implementation intentions. But if the test ended artificially early, with their computer screens pointing at Wikipedia.org, about two thirds of the subjects who had planned to use IMDb overlooked the alternative right in front of them. Those who had not made such a specific plan were able to adapt and find Murray?s birth date on Wikipedia.

Masicampo explains that although having a narrow focus probably will not lead to so obvious a failure in the real world as it did in the laboratory, he thinks being blind to alternative solutions ?frequently results in people expending more time, energy and resources on tasks than is necessary.? But that should not stop people from mak?ing plans, he says. That may be the only way to juggle multiple goals?as long as one remembers to keep an open mind.

(AP) ? The afternoon performance of "Mary Poppins" was marked by loud yips, shouts and moans ? and that was just fine.

It was the second autism-friendly performance of a Broadway show, and for many families with a child who suffers from the disorder, it turned out to be a practically perfect day.

"It is an amazing opportunity to bring our families here and enjoy the show, not be stressed, and relax and know that everyone in the theater is in our situation," said Paige Bravin, sitting with her 11-year-old daughter, Alexa, in the second row of the New Amsterdam Theatre.

The Theatre Development Fund, a nonprofit organization focused on providing access to live theater, bought all 1,797 seats for Sunday's matinee and offered reduced price tickets to families with an autistic member. They sold out in two days.

It was the second experiment following the autism-friendly showing of "The Lion King" in October. The Theatre Development Fund plans a third such show at "The Lion King" on Sept. 30. Tickets for that go on sale this summer on the fund's site.

At Sunday's matinees, about 40 autism specialists ? many of them master's students at Hunter College, special education experts or social workers ? roamed the theater, providing comfort and help to families. They wore black Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious T-shirts and held flashlights.

"They love participating and being part of this day and to see the magic," said Dr. Jamie Bleiweiss, a professor of early childhood special education at Hunter College and co-founder of the consultant and support group Autism Friendly Spaces. "It's such a rewarding way to give back and to share. This experience is pretty powerful."

To prepare the children, character guides and song lists had been made available ahead of the show so there were few surprises. Calming corners and activity areas were created in the cavernous New Amsterdam Theatre, where overwhelmed children could sit in beanbag chairs and watch a live stream of the show.

There were coloring books, puzzles, games and handy toys for fidgety patrons. Signalers on either side of the stage raised green glow sticks to warn theatergoers of upcoming loud noises or to signal that clapping was ahead.

"We're learning each time," said Victoria Bailey, TDF's executive director, who also credited Disney Theatrical Productions for allowing two of their shows to participate. "It's really clear that the demand is there."

To accommodate the special audience, a few changes were made to "Mary Poppins," including removing all strobe lights, lowering the tap sounds of "Step in Time," softening some transitions and lowering some pitches. The cast and musicians had rehearsed for several hours the day before to ensure that events at No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane were smooth.

"The power of the story remains," said David Caddick, the music supervisor. "We changed some elements to avoid a sensory overload but it doesn't in any way diminish it for the other family members."

Anthony Lyn, the show's associate director, said his team was happy to welcome a whole new audience. "I know everyone in the cast and in the building was incredibly delighted about doing today's performance," he said.

Autism disorders affect 1 in 88 U.S. children, according to U.S. government estimates. Children with the diagnosis are often sensitive to loud noises and harsh lights, and find it hard to sit still or remain quiet. Autism spectrum disorders include both severe and relatively mild symptoms.

The audience at the matinee illustrated the vast range of disabilities, from those with difficulty walking to those who just seemed shy. Many wore headphones to drown out loud sounds. Some grew tired sitting and preferred to wander the aisles or go to the unisex bathrooms. As the show progressed, some children who had been moaning or screeching became calmer. Some happily bopped along to the music.

"You don't have to worry. You're in the same position as everybody else is. You don't have to be embarrassed. It's OK that your kid is screaming, crying or carrying on," said Lisa Brodwin, whose 10-year-old daughter, Morgan, charmed the volunteers with her easy, outgoing nature.

"She loves music, she loves dancing and I wanted to take her and my other son, who's not autistic, as a family. So the four of us can do something together," said Brodwin, who is from Long Island. "I think this is so monumental. I think this is so beneficial."

The Theatre Development Fund, which also operates the TKTS booths, hopes to make such autism-friendly performances a regular event on Broadway and is happy to share what it's learned with other theater communities. It's already had several inquiries from across the nation.

"I think we're developing more awareness in the Broadway community and it's clear from surveys that we did after the first one that there's an appetite for 'Spider-Man,' there's an appetite for 'Wicked,' there's an appetite for Radio City," Bailey said. "Over time, I hope we would be able to do that."

Sutter puts Team Canada through paces

?Two hours late for a coach Sutter practice? I?d call that a veteran move,? laughed Sharp.

The two Hawks were delayed flying out of Chicago, but they?ll suit up against the Swiss.

?They haven?t been off long; it?s probably easier for them than the guys who come from teams that missed the playoffs,? said Sutter.

Keith and Sharp took the ice together for their own private practice after the team completed their session.

?Once it took off, it was an easy flight ... and I feel good,? reported Keith. ?It hasn?t affected my breathing.?

Keith said he didn?t think twice about accepting the invitation.

?I was healthy. It?s exciting to come and play for the group they?ve put together this year,? he said.

Sutter watched them for a few minutes and smiled.

?I?m really happy with our practice,? he said.

?It looks like we really have our legs under us already. There was lots of energy and lots of life,? added the coach, who had Edmonton?s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle on a line with Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars, and John Tavares of the N.Y. Islanders with Jeff Skinner of Carolina and Andrew Ladd of Winnipeg.

The other lines are to be determined.

Sutter said he plans to start Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk against the Swiss and go with Carolina?s Cam Ward, the Sherwood Park product, iTuesday in Kloten prior to opening the tournament against Slovakia in Helsinki on Friday.

?It?s a little bit of a shock to the body,? Ward said of facing a full barrage of shots Saturday after the team had mostly just skated at a short practice the day before.

?But it?s exciting, too,? said the goalie who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP after leading Carolina to a Stanley Cup victory over Edmonton in 2006.

Dubnyk is expected to start Canada?s second game, against Team USA on Saturday.

?The game against the U.S. would be a fun game to play; I want to be ready for it,? said Dubnyk, who?s been handed the backup role after being Canada?s No. 3 goalie at this tournament the past two years.

?I certainly expect to get in a couple of games. It doesn?t feel like that long ago I was on the ice with the Oilers.?

Dubnyk, who practised in Calgary with Eberle and Flames defenceman Jay Bouwmeester before flying to Europe, has drawn Nugent-Hopkins as his room-mate.

?I?m trying to keep him in line. He?s such an animal ... and he?s talking me ears off,? he joked of the quiet Calder Trophy finalist, who just turned 19.

?I?m really excited to see him go to work on the big ice. I can only imagine what he can do with all that space to work with.?

Gujarat riots: Bhatt appeals President to appoint new probe panel

Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt has petitioned President Pratibha Patil to appoint a new Commission of Inquiry to probe the role of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others in 2002 riots.

"The Government of India should expeditiously appoint a two-member commission, under Section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act 1952, headed by a retired Judge of the Supreme Court of India, to inquire into role of chief minister," Bhatt said in his petition to the president.

Bhatt further said that the role of chief minister and any other ministers in his council of ministers, police officers, other individuals and organisations with respect to the adequacy of administrative measures taken to prevent and deal with disturbances in Godhra and subsequent disturbances (communal riots) in the state should be examined by the new panel.

"The new commission should also inquire the adequacy of the steps and measures taken by the administration, from lst June 2002 till date; to facilitate relief, rehabilitation and the delivery of justice to the victims of the Godhra incident of 27th February 2002 and the subsequent communal riots of 2002 in the State of Gujarat," Bhatt has said.

It may be noted here that a panel headed by supreme court justice (retd) G T Nanavati and high court justice (retd) Akshay Mehta is already inquiring 2002 riots.

Bhatt also contended in his letter that there was a lacuna in terms of reference of Nanavati Commission.

The point of adequacy of administrative measures taken to prevent and deal with disturbances in Godhra and subsequent disturbances in the state--which was mentioned in the original terms of reference of Nanavati Commission--was deleted when the terms of reference were revised in 2004, he said.

Bhatt has also cast doubts on the overall role and conduct of the state government towards Nanavati Commission.

"It is indeed ironic that the Government of Gujarat instead of conducting itself as a neutral and dispassionate entity has chosen to act in a partisan manner by identifying with and espousing the cause of the functionaries of the state administration, including the chief minister, whose very role and conduct is squarely covered by the terms of reference of the inquiry," Bhatt said in the letter.

He further said that the state government has been severely criticised by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and several judgements of Gujarat high court and supreme court regarding the 2002 riots.

Meanwhile, Bhatt, who was summoned by the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), in response to a complaint lodged by one Niyazbibi Malek from Ognaj village in Ahmedabad district, has filed an affidavit, claiming that the gruesome incident at Godhra railway station was an orchestrated attempt to commit violence on the person and property of Muslims with "total support" and "complicity" from the state government.

The complainant had alleged that certain records that "indicated" of the state government's involvement in the riots have gone missing.

All these facts have been brought to the notice of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) as well as the Nanavati Commission but despite this they are bent upon giving a "clean chit" to these tragic events by branding them as "spontaneous" outrage against the Godhra riots, Bhatt said in the affidavit.

"It should be noted that there is enough documentary as well as oral evidence available to establish the complicity of the state and its high functionaries in these riots but the Commission and SIT are deliberately turning a blind eye to the overwhelming evidence and any persons who try to bring out the truth are victimised," he has alleged.

Cops try to flush out murder suspect from bunker

By msnbc.com staff and news services

King5.com

Authorities believe a survivalist suspected of killing his wife and daughter fled to this underground bunker in the woods east of Seattle.

NORTH BEND, Wash. -- Law officers hunting for a self-trained survivalist suspected of killing his wife and daughter were planning on Saturday how to flush out an elaborate, underground bunker where he might be hiding in the woods of Washington state.

Authorities pumped tear gas into the structure after locating it Friday in the Cascade foothills east of Seattle and heard movement inside but no one came out. The dozens of officers were not entering the bunker because they believed its occupant was heavily armed, and that it might be booby-trapped.

Sheriff's officials said later they weren't sure the gas penetrated deep enough to reach the person inside, who they believed was 41-year-old Peter Keller. They also believed the person likely had a gas mask

Officers kept watch over the bunker throughout the night.

?It was a relatively quiet night. We did see lights coming on and off throughout night. Today we?re going to use a more aggressive stance in trying to contact the suspect,? King County sheriff?s spokeswoman Katie Larson said Saturday morning.

A hostage negotiator has been called to the scene.

?At this point we?re not going into our specific tactics. Officer safety is one of our most important factors we?re dealing with,? Larson said.

King5.com

More than 100 officers and volunteers from the King County Sheriff?s Office, the Seattle Police Department and other area agencies were on hand.

Officers reported that photos of the bunker don't do it justice, said another sheriff's spokeswoman, Sgt. Cindi West.

"They said the fort appears to be amazingly fortified," she said.

While officers got one main hatch open, they believe the bunker has multiple levels as well as multiple entrances, West said.

Keller has not been seen since a fire Sunday at his North Bend-area home about 30 miles east of Seattle led responders to discover the bodies of his wife and daughter. The two had been shot to death.

"It's a very extreme tactical situation," King County Sheriff Steve Strachan said. "Time is on our side. We're not going to do anything rash."

Lynnettee and Kaylene Keller were found dead in their home

West said evidence found in Keller's home helped authorities locate the bunker, dug 20 feet into the side of a ridge in an area of dense vegetation, at noon Friday. Officers were able to pinpoint the location after enhancing a blurry photograph found on a hard drive in an open safe in Keller's house, she said. The photo included a view from the bunker in which buildings in nearby North Bend were visible, along with a set of power lines.

Detectives triangulated the rough area of the bunker and were confident they had the right location after receiving tips from people who had seen Keller's faded red pickup truck parked at the trailhead, West said.

Two experienced trackers were sent to the area and found tracks that appeared to have been made by someone carrying a heavy backpack.

SWAT teams went into the woods at 5 a.m. and could smell wood smoke from the wood stove in the bunker before they could see it, West said.

The bunker was found at about the 1,350-foot level, several hundred yards due east of a trailhead at Rattlesnake Ridge. It had several entryways and ladders.

"This isn't a hole in the ground. It's an elaborate structure," Strachan said.

Court documents described Keller as a loner who has a survivalist mentality and has been stockpiling supplies in the woods.

An arrest warrant issued Wednesday accuses him of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson.

The fire at Keller's home was stopped before the house burned down, and authorities said they found seven gasoline cans placed in different areas of the home.

The King County medical examiner has determined Kaylene Keller, 18, and her mother, Lynnettee Keller, 41, both died from gunshots to the head. Their bodies were found in their bedrooms.

Kaylene's boyfriend told detectives that Peter Keller had shown him his gun collection and several large-caliber rifles and handguns, court documents said. The boyfriend, who was not identified, said Kaylene had told him her father took long hikes on the weekends and was stockpiling supplies at a fort in the woods.

Peter Keller withdrew $6,200 from a bank last week and told one of his co-workers at a computer refurbishing store in Preston that he might not return, according to court documents.

U.S. troops synch hi-tech and nomad intel in Kony hunt

OBO, Central African Republic (Reuters) - In a bare concrete room in a far-flung corner of Central African Republic, U.S. special forces and Ugandan soldiers map out the hunt for one of Africa's most wanted rebel leaders hiding in an area the size of California.

The building belonged to the town of Obo's doctor until he was murdered last year by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) while transporting medicines by road. Now it serves as an operational centre in one of America's latest military ventures in Africa.

The mission's goal is clear.

"(The) focus is the removal of Joseph Kony and senior Lord's Resistance Army leadership from the battlefield," said Captain Ken Wright, a navy SEAL in command of the roughly 100-strong force which deployed in October.

Kony has evaded the region's militaries for nearly three decades, kidnapping tens of thousands of children to fill his militia's ranks and serve as sex slaves as he moves through the bush. Thousands more have died in the wake of his brutal army.

The deployment of elite American forces to help track Kony and his senior commanders in the dense equatorial jungle across a region that spans several countries has raised hopes the sadistic warlord's days are numbered. [ID:nL6E8FK5WF]

The troops are armed but do not patrol the surrounding forests and are allowed to engage the LRA only in self-defence.

Instead, their focus is on improving intelligence on LRA positions gathered both electronically and from tip-offs.

By meshing stories from hunters and nomadic cattle herders of encounters with the rebels together with sophisticated surveillance imagery, allied forces chart suspected rebel activity and coordinate the regional armies' pursuit of Kony.

"You look at patterns to see where LRA might be moving, historic areas where they might operate, so we can predict where they're going and try and head them off and most effectively use the forces on the ground," Captain Gregory, a 29-year-old Texan hidden behind sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat told Reuters.

For many of the U.S. troops who have recently served in Afghanistan and Iraq, the humid jungles of central Africa are unfamiliar territory.

Their deployment raised expectations locally that U.S. drones would be unearthing Kony. They are not, and this hostile environment is throwing up unforeseen challenges.

"Some of the gear we have here is affected by the vegetation ... and acts differently from in the desert. "Vegetation absorbs signals and sounds," said Gregory.

INTERNATIONAL BAD GUY

Kony, a self-styled mystic leader who at one time was bent on ruling Uganda by the ten commandments, fled his native northern Uganda in 2005, roaming first the lawless expanses of South Sudan and then the isolated north-eastern tip of Congo.

In December 2008, after last-ditch peace talks failed, Ugandan paratroopers and fighter jets struck the LRA's Congo hideouts. Kony slipped through the net, raising suspicions he had been tipped off. He and many of his combatants moved north into CAR.

Kony was thrust back into the spotlight earlier this year when a video, "Kony 2012", highlighting the chilling mutilations, rapes and murders carried out by his spell-bound fighters went viral on the Internet.

Bruce Wharton, deputy assistant secretary in the Department of State's Africa bureau said the deployment of special forces was in part a response to legislation in 2010 calling on the Obama administration to do more to tackle Kony.

"I think Kony, for lack of an ideology, for lack of a political agenda, for lack of an intellectually identifiable cause, and for the brutality with which he operates, is at the top of the list of international bad guys," Wharton said.

Asked whether hunting Kony offered a convenient way of expanding the U.S. military footprint in Africa, Wharton told Reuters: "I absolutely think that as soon as this mission is accomplished the roughly 100 troops will go away."

Facing war crimes charges, Kony has transformed himself from a one-time altar boy to a master of jungle survival and evasion. His fighters have become increasingly savvy in concealing their movements, wading through crocodile-infested rivers and walking backwards and in loops to disguise their tracks.

The vicious and often drugged rebels first struck Obo in the early hours of March 6, 2009. They targeted the town's Catholic mission, abducting 76 people.

"We were told they were coming but we didn't believe they would attack the town," said Obo resident Ricardo Dimanche who runs a community radio project urging LRA fighters to give up their weapons.

"The next year they started attacking the small villages around us. Displaced people started flooding in," said Dimanche.

Underscoring the challenge facing the American and regional troops, the LRA launched almost as many attacks in the first three months of this year in CAR as in all of last year, according to U.N. data.

"Nobody has peace of mind now," said Dimanche.

U.S. military officials are reluctant to bet on if and when they might snare Kony.

"The global effort to try to find Osama bin Laden took 10 years with an extraordinary level of effort ... the highest priority for the international intelligence community, and it still took 10 years to find him," General Carter Ham, commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) told a media briefing in Germany ahead of the tightly controlled trip.

"So this is a tough mission."

Why are cats better than dogs (according to the Internet)?

The joke that you tell about how the Internet is a waste of time if you are the kind of person who makes jokes about how the Internet is a waste of time is always something like, "The only thing the Internet is good for is cat videos and pornography." And I don't think it is being pedantic to point out that this particular line doesn't work if you substitute "dog videos." People would think you are weird. They would be like, "Why are you watching dog videos?" "Dog videos isn't a thing," they would say. But so ? and I will try to look at some actual statistics as we get more into it ? but this brings me to my first tentative answer to the "Cats On The Internet" question (which, I should also point out, is a?question?that?people?ask?a?lot.)

1. It's the culture
Through various lucky accidents, cat stuff started to permeate Internet culture pretty early on, and dogs often found themselves imitating rather than innovating in the field.?Cheezburger.com?(and yes, sure, 4chan, etc., but let's try to stay focused) certainly has an important role to play in this story, with the introduction to the wider Web of those semi-literate feline sensations the LOLcats, who at this point even your mom has heard of. And while?Happy Cat?? of whom your mom is also, arguably, at least tangentially aware ? is still the most popular image on Cheezburger, according to the site's Editor in Chief, Emily Huh, the most popular post on sister (dog-themed) site?I Has A Hot Dog?has nowhere near the same traction, either in terms of Facebook shares or in the annals of Internet culture as a whole.

Meanwhile on YouTube (always a dangerous way to start a sentence), the story is a little bit more complex. Based on media exposure alone, you'd think that the most popular pet on YouTube would be superstar cat Maru, whose love affair with boxes has garnered him over 150 million video views. But the crown for most popular pet YouTube channel actually goes to Mishka, the Siberian husky who says "I love you." Mishka has 296,000 subscribers (almost a third again as many as Maru), and 292 million video views ? which nearly doubles Maru's total.

In fact, Mishka has the No. 1 all-time pet video on YouTube, with 71 million views ? though the well-loved Surprised Kitty and an epilepsy-inducing compilation called "Funny Cats" are not too far behind in terms of views.

So if cats aren't distinguishing themselves at the top of the pack on YouTube, maybe they're doing better in aggregate? Not exactly. According to Kevin Allocca from Google's excellent?YouTube Trends?site, searches for "dog" on YouTube yield about 2 million results ? which is half a million more results than an equivalent "cat" search. And his analysis is just as damning: "Personal opinion is that cats are overrated as being most popular," he told me. "Data suggests dogs are more popular than people think."

There is, however, some hope for cat partisans, and it is related to the potential for individual pieces of cat media (I was just about to say "content," but then I remembered how much that word reminds me of a vomit bag) that go viral (i.e., achieve a high rate of sharing) compared with equivalent dog media. "When it comes to virality," says Kevin Allocca, "there seem to be more cat videos that 'go viral,' but dogs are incredibly popular on YouTube."

BuzzFeed's own data backs this up. Although we have a slightly higher number of cat than dog posts, the average reaction numbers (hearts, comments, "cutes," etc.) to these posts are remarkably similar ? but the metric that really stands out is the average number of "viral" views (traffic coming from Facebook, Twitter, and other sites linking in). For the average cat post, that's close to 9,000. For dogs, that's only 5,000. And if you add up the numbers for the top 5-performing cat posts since 2011 vs. the top 5-performing dog posts, that discrepancy becomes very clear: Cats are at 2,655,412 ? almost 2 million more than the top dogs, who could only muster a measly 700,729 views between them. Sad.

Which is super interesting and all, but so now we are right back to our original question. Why? Why why why? Here's another stab at it:

2. It's the cats
My personal theory about why cats have more "viral potential" than their canine compatriots is that cats are better at making viral videos because the dogs are?trying too hard.

Dogs are the equivalent of a "Viral Marketing Strategist" at an ad agency ? sure, they'll have a hit now and again, but unless it's really exceptional work, you'll just ignore it, because you know they're doing it to get your attention. When a dog gets in a box, it's because he desperately wants you to think he's cool. When a cat does it, it's because it suddenly felt like the right thing to do at the time ? it's cool and effortless. It feels natural.

And, most important of all, when a cat wears human clothes, it adds to his air of mystery and effortless stylishness.

OK, so that's clearly pretty biased, but maybe there's something to the notion that this particular bias is pervasive, at least on the Internet. Which brings us to a third possibility:

3. It's us
Cheezburger's Emily Huh has this theory:

In regards to why cats are more popular than dogs on the Internet, I think it's because cat owners don't have a cat park or a place where they can congregate in person to talk about their cats like how dog owners have a dog park to talk about their dogs. The Internet has provided a place for cat owners and fans of cats to talk about their own cats, comment on how hilarious, cute, or evil their cat is and swap stories, pictures, and videos.

Is it possible that the Internet is essentially serving the purpose of a great big virtual cat park? It certainly feels that way sometimes. And that's one potential explanation for the cultural bias in favor of cats online, even if it is belied by the stats which show an equivalent demand for dog stuff. Here's another explanation:

4. Path dependence
In the late '70s, VHS- and Betamax-format videotapes were competing for consumer attention in a fierce videotape format war. As those of us who still remember videotapes know, VHS (though widely held to be inferior) eventually prevailed, and Sony's Betamax tapes at first dwindled and then quickly disappeared from the market. There are a lot of theories about why VHS achieved market dominance, but a leading one relies on what economists call "path dependence" ? a tendency within institutions or industries to make current decisions based on past decisions,?regardless of quality or inherent value.

With that in mind, it could well be that the real reason we are all living in this great big virtual cat park actually has nothing to do with the cats themselves. It could be that, through historical accidents like the sudden rise to prominence of the LOLcats, our feline overlords achieved a negligible early adoption lead over their canine competitors, which is constantly reiterated and reinforced by unknowingly biased publishers and content (ugh) producers like BuzzFeed, who privilege cats simply because that seems like the way we've always done it.

Of course, there is one other explanation that we haven't explored at all yet:

5. Dogs are idiots
Haha, just messing with you guys. Dogs are great. I love dogs.
