Midlife and Late-Life Depressive Symptoms Associated with Dementia

ScienceDaily (May 7, 2012) ? Depressive symptoms that are present in midlife or in late life are associated with an increased risk of developing dementia, according to a report in the May issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, a JAMA Network publication.

Nearly 5.3 million individuals in the United States have Alzheimer disease (AD) and the resulting health care costs in 2010 were roughly $172 billion, the authors write as background information in the study. "Prevalence and costs of AD and other dementias are projected to rise dramatically during the next 40 years unless a prevention or a cure can be found. Therefore, it is critical to gain a greater understanding of the key risk factors and etiologic underpinnings of dementia from a population-based perspective," the authors write.

Deborah E. Barnes, Ph.D., M.P.H., of the University of California, San Francisco and the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and colleagues evaluated data from 13,535 long-term Kaiser Permanente members and examined depressive symptoms assessed in midlife (1964-1973) and in late life (1994-2000) and risks of developing dementia, Alzheimer disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD; dementia resulting from brain damage from impaired blood flow to the brain).

Depressive symptoms were present in 14.1 percent of study participants in midlife only, 9.2 percent in late life only and 4.2 percent in both. During six years of follow-up, 22.5 percent of patients were diagnosed with dementia; 5.5 percent with Alzheimer disease and 2.3 percent with VaD.

When examining AD and VaD separately, patients with late-life depressive symptoms had a two-fold increase in AD risk, and patients with midlife and late-life symptoms had more than a three-fold increase in VaD risk.

"Our findings suggest that chronic depression during the life course may be etiologically associated with an increased risk of dementia, particularly VaD, whereas depression that occurs for the first time in late life is likely to reflect a prodromal stage of dementia, in particular AD," the authors conclude.

Male college students believe taking performance-enhancing drugs for sports is more unethical than using stimulants to improve grades

ScienceDaily (May 8, 2012) ? In the eyes of young college men, it's more unethical to use steroids to get an edge in sports than it is to use prescription stimulants to enhance one's grades, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

And students who had themselves used stimulants without a prescription were more inclined to see such drug use as acceptable, according to the findings, which were published online in the APA journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. This is one of the first studies to compare perceptions of off-label prescription drug use with perceptions of steroids performance enhancers.

"This is consistent with the idea that using performance enhancers is viewed as less ethical in the sporting world than in the academic world," said the study's lead author, Tonya Dodge, PhD, of George Washington University. "Interestingly, the students in our study considered off-label prescription drug use as more effective for success than using steroids."

Approximately 1,200 college freshmen (73 percent white) at Pennsylvania State University answered a questionnaire that presented two scenarios. One described "Bill," a sprinter for his college track team who does not have a lot of time to train before the championship meet and is worried he won't be able to improve. He gets steroids from a friend and ends up performing better than expected and wins the championship race.

The second scenario presents "Jeff," a college student facing midterm exams who is worried that his grades in class may be low. He doesn't have much time to study so he gets some Adderall, a prescription stimulant, from a friend who tells him it will help him focus at exam time. Jeff takes the pills and ends up getting better midterm grades than he expected.

After reading both scenarios, the students were asked how strongly they agreed or disagreed with four statements: "Bill/Jeff is a cheater for using steroids/Adderall," and, "Taking steroids/Adderall was necessary for Bill/Jeff to do well."

The students were also asked if they had ever misused prescription stimulant drugs, such as Adderall, Ritalin or Dexedrine, or if they had ever used steroids. Less than 1 percent of the sample reported having ever used steroids while about 8 percent said they had misused prescription stimulants in the last 12 months. This compares to 8 percent to 34 percent of college students who have reported misusing prescription stimulants and 1.5 percent of adolescents and young adults who have misused anabolic steroids.

The researchers also asked the men if they had played a sport in high school to determine if that would affect their judgments.

Participants significantly rated Bill, the steroid user, as more of a cheater than Jeff, the prescription drug user. This difference got bigger if the students reported having misused prescription stimulants themselves in the past or if they had played a sport.

Overall, the students were more likely to consider Jeff's Adderall use more necessary to succeed than Bill's steroid use regardless of whether they had misused prescription stimulants in the past or had played a sport. "One reason students may have felt Adderall was more necessary than steroids for success is because people may believe intelligence is less malleable than athletic ability. This view of intelligence might have led the students in this study to believe that taking Adderall would increase intellectual capacity," said Dodge. "This research can help mold future prevention efforts around off-label prescription stimulant use in the academic world."

The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States and is the world's largest association of psychologists. APA's membership includes more than 137,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance psychology as a science, as a profession and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare.

Kickstarter talks to us about product 'pre-orders,' won't force refunds when creators flake

ImageKickstarter has proven an incredibly effective venue for connecting project creators with monetary support -- inventors pitch directly to consumers, indie filmmakers meet indie producers and food trucks get the financial push necessary to take their restaurants to the road. With the latter two, backers don't necessarily expect goods in return, save for an overvalued t-shirt, bumper sticker or film credit. When it comes to electronics, however, funders are often promised a first-off-the-line gadget -- one that may never arrive at their door.

One oft-overlooked, yet critical detail should help curb expectations, while also serving to filter out pledges that are motivated by the pre-order promise, from those that offer financial support without a guaranteed return. Like it or not, all transactions fall into that second category. Pre-order offers may go unfulfilled, and some pledges may be reduced to donations, if a project creator ends up unable to deliver an item as intended. And such situations may not prompt a refund, souring the experience for an increasing number of hopeful device owners. Join us past the break for an explanation from the Kickstarter team, and a closer look at some recent examples.

'Fusarium dieback' severely damaged avocados in Israel, says UC Riverside plant pathologist Akif Eskalen, who identified the fungus

RIVERSIDE, Calif. A plant pathologist at the University of California, Riverside has identified a fungus that has been linked to the branch dieback and general decline of several backyard avocado and landscape trees in residential neighborhoods of Los Angeles County.

The fungus is a new species of Fusarium. Scientists are working on characterizing its specific identification. It is transmitted by the Tea Shot Hole Borer (Euwallacea fornicatus), an exotic ambrosia beetle that is smaller than a sesame seed. The disease it spreads is referred to as "Fusarium dieback."

"This beetle has also been found in Israel and since 2009, the beetle-fungus combination has caused severe damage to avocado trees there," said Akif Eskalen, an extension plant pathologist UC Riverside, whose lab identified the fungus.

To date, the Tea Shot Hole Borer has been reported on 18 different plant species worldwide, including avocado, tea, citrus, guava, lychee, mango, persimmon, pomegranate, macadamia and silk oak.

Eskalen explained that the beetle and fungus have a symbiotic relationship.

"When the beetle burrows into the tree, it inoculates the host plant with the fungus it carries in its mouth parts," he said. "The fungus then attacks the vascular tissue of the tree, disturbing water and nutrient flow, and eventually causing branch dieback. The beetle larvae live in galleries within the tree and feed on the fungus."

Although the beetle was first detected in Los Angeles County in 2003, reports of its negative impact on tree health were paid no attention until February 2012, when Eskalen found both the beetle and fungus on a backyard avocado tree showing dieback symptoms in South Gate, Los Angeles County. The Agricultural Commissioner of Los Angeles County and the California Food and Drug Administration have confirmed the identity of the beetle.

"This is the very same fungus that caused avocado dieback in Israel," Eskalen said. "The California Avocado Commission is concerned about the economic damage this fungus can do to the industry here in California.

"For now, we are asking gardeners to keep an eye on their trees and report to us any sign of the fungus or beetle," he added. "Symptoms in avocado include the appearance of white powdery exudate in association with a single beetle exit hole on the bark of the trunk and main branches of the tree. This exudate could be dry or it can appear as a wet discoloration."

A team of UCR scientists has been formed to study Fusarium dieback in Southern California. Eskalen and Alex Gonzalez, a field specialist, are already conducting a survey to determine the extent of the beetle infestation and the likely extent of the fungus infection in avocado trees and other host plants. Richard Stouthamer, a professor of entomology, and Paul Rugman-Jones, an associate specialist in entomology, are studying the biology and genetics of the beetle.

Gogo grabs 1MHz spectrum from JetBlue subsidiary LiveTV, beefs up in-flight bandwidth

Gogo grabs 1MHz spectrum from JetBlue subsidiary LiveTV, beefs up its in-flight bandwidthIn-flight internet provider Gogo's been increasing its domestic presence of late, so it makes sense for the company to snag some additional spectrum as well. Its new wireless license is for a chunk of 1 MHz spectrum that Gogo got from Live TV, the subsidiary of JetBlue that handles all of that airline's in-air entertainment and communications services. Gogo's new spectrum will augment its existing Air-to-Ground network here in the US -- pending FCC approval, of course -- and provide road (sky?) warriors with a bit more bandwidth once above 10,000 feet. For all you jet-setters, we should mention that your Gulfstream's Airfone bill will be going to Gogo from now on, as LiveTV tossed the venerable voice service in the deal, too.

TUAW Bookshelf -- The Business of iPhone and iPad Development ...

A recommendation by Chris Forsythe pointed me to Dave Wooldridge and Michael Schneider's book "The Business of iPhone and iPad Development: Making and Marketing Apps" (Apress, 2011).

A practical primer on creating your business plan, the book offers advice on topics diverse as protecting your intellectual property and why testing and usability is crucial for app success.

It's an easy read (admittedly a little choppy in the writing at times) but I found it full of valuable advice, especially for anyone who is thinking about entering the App Store ecosystem but hasn't jumped in yet.

You'll find coverage about competitive research and being realistic about what it takes to succeed in App Store. From pricing your app (free or not), monetizing free apps (iAds and other in-app opportunities), to Freemium models (leveraging in-app purchase), a large part of the book centers on understanding how to sell. A final series of chapters covers marketing issues, like creating pre-release buzz and press releases.

If I have any criticism, it's that the authors sometimes went a little too technical (there's actual code in the book and their intro recommends a programming background) for a general business text. The advice here is perfectly valid for people hiring tech personnel, not just one-man dev shops. There's also a bunch of lists that seem to be there to increase the page count rather than offer a practical value to the reader and the ebook table of contents was set up in an odd way (you have to click on page numbers, not section names). Those are minor quibbles.

I wish the authors had spent more time on the strength of the book (creating a business plan) and less on technical implementation details. That said, there's plenty of good, solid advice and you should not be scared away from purchasing this title if you're not a programmer.

[Full disclosure: Steve Sande and I are writing Pitch Perfect, which talks about how to pitch your app for reviews and has some (but not much) topic overlap with this book.]

Unity and spirituality in Russia

Having grown up during the cold war, when Russia and the United States were said to be enemies, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to see a different side of Russia through a Sister City program. In 1991 when I visited the Russian Far East, I thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, but I soon found myself hoping that I would have an opportunity to return. I did, and I now spend almost half of every year there.

What kindled my desire to become more intimately acquainted with the Russian people is their innate spirituality. Life was difficult for them in the 1990s. Stores were often empty. The government-provided social services, which had included health care, day care, education, etc., were falling apart as their nation struggled with the implosion of their former government.

Yet their tenacity in hanging on to good; their loyalty, courage, kindness; the value they placed on honor; their sense of humor and compassion; brought a unity and strength to their lives that bolstered them and kept their hope alive. These qualities encouraged them to strive toward building a bright future. Over the past 20 years, a new sense of prosperity has raised the standard of living for most Russians. There is much to be grateful for in the progress made, but as is true throughout our world, there is also a need to be vigilant that our collective quest to obtain a higher material standard of living does not overshadow the value of spirituality.

Monitor founder Mary Baker Eddy, speaking of spirituality, wrote: ?We cannot build safely on false foundations. Truth makes a new creature, in whom old things pass away and ?all things are become new.? Passions, selfishness, false appetites, hatred, fear, all sensuality, yield to spirituality, and the superabundance of being is on the side of God, good? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 201).

Spiritual qualities are a strong and timeless foundation on which we can safely build a future that is stable yet open to constructive changes. On a material level, change is a constant: technology evolves, politicians come and go, and seasons roll by in unending cycles. Yet beneath the surface, spiritual qualities continue to underpin the development of every worthwhile achievement humanity has reached.

Receptivity opens our eyes to new possibilities and brings innovative ideas into focus. Courage and perseverance motivate us to keep working until we reach our goals. Wisdom guides our progress by tempering excessive ambition and impulsiveness with prudence. Unselfed love teaches us to be inclusive, helping us overcome greed or indifference, which create unhealthy divisions. Compassion impels us to seek understanding, to help one another in times of need, and to forgive. Together, compassion, understanding, and forgiveness create a platform for friendship and form a base for world peace.

Every culture has its own form of government and traditions, but as we look beyond the surface, we?ll begin to see and understand the deeper spiritual qualities that transcend all that seems to divide us, and we?ll discover our native unity as one worldwide family.

Protein signal is crucial for accurate control of insect size

Saturday, May 5, 2012

Two independent groups of researchers have identified a hormone that is responsible for keeping the growth and development of insects on track. The results, which are reported in the journal Science, suggest that Dilp8 provides an important signal to slow body growth and delay insect development. This braking effect is an essential part of normal development since it allows sufficient time for tissues to form and the correct body size, proportions and symmetry to be achieved.

"The important question about the control of animal size is knowing when to stop," said EMBO Member Maria Dominguez, lead author of one of the papers and Professor at the Institute of Neurosciences in Alicante, Spain. "To achieve the required precision in the control of growth, organs within the body of an insect must be capable of sensing their own size and communicating their dimensions to other organs in the body and to the endocrine system." She added: "Our work with Drosophila suggests that growing organs and tissues produce a secreted peptide known as Dilp8. This hormone coordinates the growth rate of different organs in the body and is capable of delaying important developmental steps such as metamorphosis. In healthy flies, this additional time is essential to ensure that functional tissues are established and for organs to reach normal size. It also ensures that organs maintain perfect bilateral symmetry."

Dominguez and collaborators examined tumours in the eye discs of Drosophila, parts of the insect body that go on to generate fully formed eyes in mature adult flies. Developing flies often adjust growth and the timing of metamorphosis to compensate for the disturbance induced by tumours or injury. The researchers wanted to investigate if a shared molecular signal was responsible for these observations. "Our work identifies Dilp8 as a signal that communicates the growth status of tissues as well as local responses to recovery from injury and cancer," said Dominguez.

EMBO Member Pierre L?opold and collaborators from the Institute of Biology Valrose at the University of Nice, France, identified the same protein using a different experimental approach. "We used a genome-wide RNA interference approach to look for Drosophila gene candidates that might be involved in coupling growth with the timing of development. Out of 11,000 genes that we tested in our genetic screen, only one was able, upon silencing, to rescue the delay in development induced by conditions that perturb tissue growth. This candidate gene corresponded to dilp8, which is exactly same gene identified by Dominguez and collaborators."

The expression of the dilp8 gene reduces tissue growth, which suggests that in addition to its role in preventing the hormonal induction of metamorphosis, dilp8 could act by slowing the growth of healthy tissues to stay synchronized with slow-growing tissue.

Until now, little information at the molecular level has been available about how organ growth is monitored and coordinated with the timing of development in insects and other complex organisms. Dilp8 appears to be part of the molecular machinery that helps tissues to grow and develop at the right pace.

Man City on verge of English Premier League title

Manchester City moved to within touching distance of a first English league title in 44 years after Yaya Toure scored twice in a 2-0 win at Newcastle United.

Victory left leaders City in front of reigning Premier League champions Manchester United -- who beat Swansea City 2-0 later on Sunday -- on goal difference with just one round of fixtures remaining.

City have a goal-difference advantage of eight over United and if they beat Queens Park Rangers at Eastlands a week on Sunday, they will be all but assured of the title.

Sir Alex Ferguson's United side would need to thrash Sunderland at the Stadium of Light to stand a chance of retaining their crown.

At St James' Park, Ivory Coast midfielder Toure opened the scoring for City in the 70th minute when he struck a curling shot from the edge of the box that beat Newcastle keeper Tim Krul.

Last crowned champions of England in 1968, City wasted several chances before Toure finished off a counter-attack a minute from full-time to seal victory.

However, Toure warned that there was still work to be done.

"It's not finished," he told Sky Sports. "We have one game left and we have to be careful as QPR are fighting to stay in the Premier League.

"This is brilliant for us, though."

City manager Roberto Mancini, whose side were eight points behind United just a few weeks ago, added: "I hope (this is enough) but I think that it is not."

Defeat left Newcastle in fifth place -- just outside the top-four spot they need to have a chance of Champions League qualification.

Before kick-off at Old Trafford, United manager Ferguson admitted City had "probably two" hands on the Premier League trophy.

And after seeing his side beat Swansea, Ferguson was left hoping former United striker and ex-City manager Mark Hughes, the QPR coach, could do the champions a favour.

"QPR need a point; you never know," he said. "I just wish Sparky (Hughes) was playing."

Paul Scholes -- brought out of retirement earlier this season -- gave United a 28th-minute lead after turning in a shot from fellow midfielder Michael Carrick.

Four minutes before the break United had a second when Ashley Young's low strike beat Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm.

Elsewhere, 10-man Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, who edged nearer top-flight survival.

Victory would have seen fourth-placed Tottenham leapfrog north London rivals Arsenal into third spot and a guaranteed place in the first round of next season's Champions League.

But they fell behind in the 35th minute to Villa midfielder Ciaran Clark's deflected shot.

Early in the second half, Tottenham's Danny Rose was sent off for a two-footed challenge on former Spurs defender Alan Hutton.

However, Spurs were level in the 62nd minute when Emmanuel Adebayor scored from the penalty spot after Richard Dunne fouled Sandro.

At the bottom of the table, QPR moved two points clear of the relegation zone after Djibril Cisse's 89th-minute winner secured a 1-0 win at home to Stoke City.

Hughes, looking ahead to the City match, said: "It would be a fantastic story if we were able to go there and get something. They are going for titles and we are trying to stay in this league."

Bolton Wanderers remained in the bottom three after a 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion.

Martin Petrov's penalty and a Billy Jones own goal put Bolton 2-0 up but late goals from Chris Brunt and James Morrison saw the Baggies draw level.

"We feel we've dropped two points," said Bolton manager Owen Coyle. "We need to go to Stoke and win the game."

Elsewhere, Fulham beat mid-table rivals Sunderland 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

United States forward Clint Dempsey gave the Cottagers a 12th-minute lead and no sooner had Phil Bardsley equalised then Fulham's Moussa Dembele scored their second.

Already relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers were held to a goalless draw at home to Everton.

Second-bottom Blackburn Rovers play Wigan Athletic -- who are not yet out of danger -- on Monday, while Tuesday sees a repeat of the FA Cup final when Chelsea, 2-1 winners at Wembley on Saturday, are away to Liverpool.

Obama plunges into campaign, tears into Romney

(AP) ? Plunging into his campaign for a new term, President Barack Obama tore into Mitt Romney on Saturday as a willing and eager "rubber stamp" for conservative Republicans in Congress and an agenda to cut taxes for the rich, reduce spending on education and Medicare and enhance power that big banks and insurers hold over consumers.

Romney and his "friends in Congress think the same bad ideas will lead to a different result or they're just hoping you won't remember what happened the last time you tried it their way," the president told an audience estimated at over 10,000 partisans at what aides insisted was his first full-fledged political rally of the election year.

Six months before Election Day, the polls point to a close race between Obama and Romney, with the economy the overriding issue as the nation struggles to recover from the worst recession since the 1930s. Unemployment remains stubbornly high at 8.1 percent nationally, although it has receded slowly and unevenly since peaking several months into the president's term. The most recent dip was due to discouraged jobless giving up their search for work.

Romney has staked his candidacy on an understanding of the economy, developed through a successful career as a businessman, and his promise to enact policies that stimulate job creation.

But Obama said his rival was merely doing the bidding of the conservative powerbrokers in Congress and has little understanding of the struggles of average Americans.

Romney "doesn't seem to understand that maximizing profits by whatever means necessary, whether it's through layoffs or outsourcing or tax avoidance, union busting, might not always be good for the average American or for the American economy," the president said.

"Why else would he want to cut his own taxes while raising them for 18 million Americans," Obama said of his multimillionaire opponent.

While Romney has yet to flesh out a detailed economic program, he and Republicans in Congress want to extend all the tax cuts that are due to expire at year's end. Obama and most Democrats want to let taxes rise for upper-income earners.

The president's campaign chose Ohio State University and Virginia Commonwealth University for the back-to-back rallies. Obama won both states in his successful race in 2008, although both have elected Republican governors since, and are expected to be hotly contested in the fall.

Obama has attended numerous fundraisers this election year, but over the escalating protests of Republicans, the White House has categorized all of his other appearances so far as part of his official duties.

The staging of the events eliminated any doubt about his purpose.

He was introduced in Columbus and again in Richmond by first lady Michelle Obama, and walked in to the cheers of thousands, many of them waving campaign-provided placards that read "Forward."

While the president is notably grayer than he was four years ago, he and his campaign worked to rekindle the energy and excitement among students and other voters who propelled him to the presidency in 2008.

"When people ask you what this election is about, you tell them it is still about hope. You tell them it is still about change," he said. It was a rebuttal to Romney's campaign, which has lately taken to mocking Obama's 2008 campaign mantra as "hype and blame."

If the economy is a potential ally for Romney, Obama holds other assets six months before the vote.

Unlike Romney, who struggled through a highly competitive primary season before recently wrapping up the nomination, Obama was unchallenged within his own party. As a result, his campaign's most recent filing showed cash on hand of $104 million, compared with a little over $10 million for Romney, and has worked to build organizations in several states for months.

But in the aftermath of recent Supreme Court rulings, modern presidential campaigns are more than ever waged on several fronts, and the effect of super political action committees and other outside groups able to raise donations in unlimited amounts is yet to be felt.

Already, while Romney pauses to refill his coffers, the super PAC Restore Our Future has spent more than $4 million on television advertising to introduce the Republican to the voters.

Romney had no public events Saturday after spending much of the week campaigning in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

A campaign spokeswoman, Andrea Saul, responding to Obama's speech in Ohio, said, "While President Obama all but ignored his record over 3 1/2 years in office, the American people won't. This November, they will hold him accountable for his broken promises and ineffective leadership."

With his rhetoric, Obama belittled Romney and signaled he intends to campaign both against his challenger and the congressional Republicans who have opposed most of his signature legislation overwhelmingly, if not unanimously.

After a spirited campaign for the Republican nomination, Obama said the GOP leadership found a nominee ? in Virginia he called Romney their champion ? "who has promised to rubber stamp" their agenda if he gets a chance.

Romney is a "patriotic American who has raised a wonderful family," and has been a successful businessman and governor, the president said. "But I think he has drawn the wrong lessons from that experience. He sincerely believes that if CEOs and investors like him make money the rest of us will automatically do well as well."

In addition to depicting Romney as a threat to the middle class, Obama also tried to blunt the impact of what is likely to be the Republicans' best campaign issue.

"The economy is still facing headwinds and it will take sustained persistent efforts, yours and mine, for America to fully recover," the president said. He noted that jobs are being created and urged his audience not to give in to what he predicted would be negative campaign commercials designed to "exploit frustrations."

"Over and over again they'll tell you that America is down and out and they'll tell you who to blame and ask if you're better off than the worst crisis in our lifetime," he said. "The real question ... is not just about how we're doing today but how we'll be doing tomorrow."

Scarcely more than a dozen states figure to be seriously contested in the fall, including the two where Obama campaigned Saturday.

They include much of the nation's industrial belt, from Wisconsin to Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, as well as Nevada, Colorado and, the president's campaign insists, Arizona; the latter three all have large Hispanic populations. Both campaigns also are focusing on Iowa, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and New Hampshire. Together, those states account for 157 electoral votes.

Barring a sudden crisis, foreign policy is expected to account for less voter interest than any presidential campaign since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Since taking office, Obama has made good on his pledge to end the war in Iraq, announced a timetable to phase out the U.S. combat role in Afghanistan by 2014 and given the order for a risky mission by special forces in which Osama bin Laden was killed in his hideout in Pakistan.

One recent poll showed the public trusts Obama over Romney by a margin of 53-36 on international affairs.

While the battleground states tend to be clustered geographically, the state-by-state impact of the recession and economic recovery varies.

In Ohio, for example unemployment was most recently measured at 7.6 percent, below the national average. It was higher, 9.1 percent and rising, when Obama took office, reaching 10.6 percent in the fall of 2009 before it began receding.

In Virginia, it was 5.6 percent in March, well below the national average. It was 6.6 percent in February 2009 and peaked in June of that year at 7.2.

In a measurement that shows an economy recovering, yet far from recovered, the Labor Department reported this month that 54 metropolitan areas had double-digit unemployment in March, down from 116 a year ago. By contrast, joblessness was below 7.0 percent in 109 areas, up from 62 a year earlier.

No matter the change, Romney attacks Obama's handling of the economy at every turn.

"If the last 3 1/2 years are his definition of forward, I'd have to see what backward looks like," he said late last week in Virginia.

The first lady, who accompanied the president during the day, has attended more than 50 fundraisers since his campaign filed formal candidacy papers with the Federal Election Commission 13 months ago.

Liz Cheney: Are we ready for another political dynasty?

Liz Cheney?? daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney?? may be positioning herself to run for Congress from Wyoming, the state her father represented. Is America ready for another political dynasty?

The Kennedys (Jack, Teddy and a bunch of others), the Bushes (George, George, and Jeb), the Pauls (Ron and Rand), the Clintons (Bill and Hillary). Is America ? founded to put an end to hereditary monarchy ? ready for another political dynasty?

Skip to next paragraph President Obama?s advantage on national security marks the first time in decades a Democratic candidate has had such an edge. DC Decoder?s Liz Marlantes explains.

Politico reports that Liz Cheney, daughter of the former vice president, may be following her father into Congress ? or at least making speeches and otherwise positioning herself to make a run for office.

Before he moved to Washington as Secretary of Defense, White House chief of staff, and then VP under George W. Bush, Dick Cheney represented Wyoming in the House of Representatives, where he was reelected five times. (No, his most important role was not as Darth Vader, although he good-naturedly adopted the nickname.)

Like all good potential candidates for high office, Ms. Cheney demurs.

?Right now, I?m focused on the presidential campaign and getting Mitt Romney elected,? she told the Cody Enterprise newspaper in Wyoming, and she?s doing that in many venues ? including groups that could be very helpful in a campaign.

Cheney told the recent meeting of the powerful Jewish lobby AIPAC (the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee), "There is no president who has done more to delegitimize and destabilize the state of?Israel?in recent history than President Obama."

Meanwhile, in speeches to Wyoming audiences, Cheney emphasizes the economy.

"The difference between how things work in D.C. and Wyoming is that your credit rating is Triple A and the federal government saw its credit rating decline under the current administration," she told the annual dinner of the Casper Area Chamber of Commerce.

"President Obama has showed no intent or ability to put structural changes into place" that will help control the national debt, she said, according to the Wyoming Business Report.

"He formed the national debt commission ? the Simpson-Bowles group ? and has ignored their recommendations," she said. "The solution to our problems is a new president." And a strengthened Republican caucus in the House and Senate, she might have added.

Last month, Cheney appeared with her father at the state GOP's convention. It was Dick Cheney's first public engagement since he underwent a heart transplant.

Early in the Obama administration, the two Cheneys tag-teamed the new president over Afghanistan, claiming that he had dithered, meandered, waffled, and ?seems afraid.?

(That was before Obama ramped up the number of US troops there, launched hundreds of drone attacks, and took out Osama bin Laden.)

On ?Keep America Safe? (the organization she founded), as a Fox News contributor, and elsewhere, she continues to hammer Obama on national security issues, claiming for example that there is ?no terrorist Obama is unwilling to release.?

All of which sounds like building a case for one?s candidacy ? and a possible antidote to the GOP?s alleged ?war on women.?

Is the former Veep urging his daughter to follow in his congressional footsteps? Hard to know, although one can imagine fatherly pride at the notion ? and a desire to pass along the benefit of his political experience and wisdom.

"My dad always keeps track of my travels and media performances and gives me advice on how to do better or how to address an issue differently," Ms. Cheney told the Chamber of Commerce group in Casper.

Running for Congress as the child of a former member would not be unheard of or all that unusual.

?For a nation forged by revolution against a hereditary monarchy, America has always had an unusual tolerance for ? or even embrace of ? political dynasty,? notes Charles Mahtesian, Politico?s national politics editor.

?In his book America's Political Dynasties, scholar Stephen Hess counted some 700 families in which two or more members had served in Congress since 1774 ? and that book was published nearly a half-century ago, in 1966,? he writes. ?At the moment, there's somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 members of Congress whose parents also served in Congress, or have a sibling or cousin in Congress, or who succeeded to their husband's seat. And there's more waiting in the wings: Seven sons of congressmen are currently seeking election to the House.?

And perhaps a daughter as well.

How to remove your ex from your online life

By Leslie Meredith

TechNewsDaily

Moving on after a breakup has gotten a lot tougher since technology has become such an integral part of our lives. It used to be just a matter of tossing out his toothbrush and throwing out the six-pack you kept in the fridge for him. Now it also requires a bit of typing. But it can be done.?Dry your eyes, log on and tune him out.

Your phone
Delete text messages. Phones clog up with banal messages: "C U," "Be there in 5." And even "luv u" missives. Same goes for voicemail ? you do not need to listen to his voice again. Look at it this way: You're making room for someone new.?But don?t delete his contact information. Consider changing his name to "Do not answer." Once you've listened to the voicemail ? who can resist? ? delete.?

Email
The longer you've been together, the more email you'll have buried pages back. Instead of deleting each one, type his email into your search, select all and delete them. If your contacts aren't synced with the changes you just made on your phone, delete him from your email address book ? no chance of seeing his address as an autofill option.?

Facebook
The great thing about?Timeline?is that you can "hide" items rather than delete them. There may come a time when you'll be glad things didn't work out, but until then, you don't need the reminders. Plus, what if "new guy" starts digging into your profile? He doesn't need to see you smooching another man.?

Instagram
Go to your?Instagram?profile and select "Photos" and open each one with your ex in it. (But if there's a great picture of you that he took, save it ? could be perfect for a match.com profile?picture.) Use the box with the three dots to access your options. That's right ? it's the big red delete button.?

Pinterest
Chances are he's not on?Pinterest, but if you succumbed to pinning romantic visions of your future, delete the pins that will only remind you of what might have been.?

Spotify or other?music services

Change Your Lifestyle to Overcome Snoring ... - Health and Fitness

Many people suffer from breathing disorders that interrupt sleep, such as snoring or sleep apnoea. There are various medical devices, tablets, sprays and even surgery that can alleviate the symptoms.

But there are other effective remedies that sufferers can undertake themselves. These involve changing your lifestyle. Let?s have a look at lifestyle changes that could be helpful, particularly for sleep.

Smoking

If you?re a heavy drinker or smoker, cutting back on these things will help.

The nicotine in cigarettes is a stimulant which creates an over-reaction in brain cells. Some sensitive people suffer insomnia after having a smoke before bed,

Smoking is harmful and leads to many health disorders. Quitting it will ensure better health and some relief from sleep disorders.

If you have trouble quitting, tried therapy, neurolinguistic programming (NLP), psychologists and behaviour modification in general, and still can?t quit, then I suggest brain entrainment, coupled with subliminal technology.

Alcohol

You probably didn?t know that alcohol greatly reduces the firmness of your muscles. So when you?re breathing and throat muscles sag due to alcoholic intake, you are unable to breathe properly as the muscles block your airways.

A glass or two of red wine with a meal is recommended, as it contains a quantity of the anti-oxidant OPC85. It is generally okay if you drink no more than two standard drinks per day. Any more and the protective effect, if any, is overshadowed by the increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Moderation is the answer.

Drugs and Sleeping Pills

Drugs and sleeping pills might have the same effect as alcohol on the muscles around your airways.

It should be remembered that taking sedatives to help you sleep will create a dependence in the long run. You don?t want to add new problems to existing ones.

Try to sleep naturally on your own.

Allergies and Infections

If you know that you suffer from an allergy and you know what triggers it ? simply stay away from it. If you do not know if you have any food intolerance or allergies, and suffer from sleep breathing disorders, it?s time to find out.

Simple skin tests can be undertaken by a variety of different health practitioners to determine what ? if any ? foods or substances you might react to.

Sleeping

Sleep is an active, organized process essential for life. It supplies the physical and emotional renewal necessary for your survival. The body relaxes nerves and muscles during sleep. That revitalizes them to carry on the biological processes inside the body. The whole process resembles recharging a battery.

Our sleep pattern depends on our circadian rhythm, the body clock that keeps us on regular 24-hour cycles and determines the quantity and quality of our sleep. This rhythm requires us to sleep for certain period regularly. The amount of necessary sleep may be different in different individuals, but it needs to be free of any disruption. Research shows that eight hours of sleep a day is optimum for most people while some can sleep less because they condition their brain to achieve highly effective sleep.

Deprivation of sleep may lead to several physical and mental disorders. Sleep is a crucial part of our survival. Most people need uninterrupted sleep for at least eight hours each day. Unchecked, serious sleep disorders need quick medical attention and diagnosis as they could become fatal.

Some people have forgotten how to sleep well. Yes, you read that correctly, forgotten how to sleep well. What happens is that your brain is trained in a certain way. If your sleep is constantly interrupted, it is difficult ? if not impossible ? to get a rejuvenative sleep, even if you removed the underlying cause of the disease.

There is most definitely hope with mental patterns and ? you guessed it ? brain entrainment. My message to you is that your mind is infinitely more powerful than any drug, medication or therapy that exists. Fine-tune your mind and you fine-tune your life.

Most significantly of all, research has shown that reducing excess weight will do more to reduce your sleep apnoea than any other change in lifestyle.

We?ll address this issue in the next article.
