Joint Code Of Practice And Carpet Protection? | Online Business ...

?

By Richard Johnson

Construction sites can be dangerous places and every year there are fires in buildings whilst they are being converted or updated. The joint code of practice was setup in order to reduce the numbers of fires in the construction industry and save lives.

One of the codes of practice requires that all temporary protection materials, such as carpet protection, used in construction sites should be flame retardant and conform to the requirements of the loss prevention standard LPS 1207 or LPS 1215. All temporary carpet protection materials must be printed with the LPCB marking and certificate number to ensure there is no question over whether the material meets the loss prevention standard.

The reason you probably chose to use carpet protection is to ensure that you do not occur any losses when it comes to having an accident or spillage. If the floor protection you chose does not comply with the joint code of practice then this could result in an uninsured loss and insurance becoming unavailable or withdrawn. Therefore it makes no sense not to choose one of the many temporary carpet protection products on the market today. Most of the products that conform to the code are of a similar price or very slightly more than ones that don?t conform, so take a little extra time when choosing you carpet protection and make sure it has the correct retardant certification standards.

Who does the code apply to? Well even if you have subcontracted the work out to another company, the code affects the company who is responsible for the insurance of the construction project. Therefore it is your responsibility to check that your sub-contractors are using the correct temporary carpet protection materials.

Yet again this is just another example where cutting corners really does not pay, it would only take one large uninsured loss to put most companies out of business and if not, word of mouth travels fast in the construction industry and you would not want to be known as a company that cuts corners and risks the lives of its staff now would you? That?s a sure way of losing staff, potential new clients and going bump.

So I will reiterate, take a little extra time when choosing you carpet protection and make sure it has the correct retardant certification standards, it is just not worth the risk to you, your company or your staff.
