South Carolina cited by NCAA for monitoring violations

Columbia, SC (My Sportsbook) - The University of South Carolina has been cited by the NCAA's Committee on Infractions for failure to monitor its athletics program regarding illegal activities by boosters.

The announcement was made Friday, revealing that the committee will not impose greater sanctions than the university imposed upon itself during an internal review. The report also cited the school for its exemplary cooperation with the NCAA during its own investigation.

"The committee decided not to impose more stringent sanctions in this case, including a postseason ban because: i) the cooperation exhibited by the institution went beyond its obligations under [NCAA Bylaws]; ii) the violations were limited in scope; iii) the institution self-imposed significant penalties and; iv) there was no unethical conduct in this case."

"The University regrets the past actions and decisions by individuals that resulted in violations of NCAA legislation," said Eric Hyman, USC director of athletics. "We are pleased, however, that the Committee on Infractions found the corrective actions we have taken and the penalties we have self- imposed reflect the University's commitment to full compliance with NCAA rules."

The crux of the violations stem from two boosters providing more than $8,000 in assistance to both Gamecock prospects and student-athletes, particularly the football and men's basketball teams. Four employees of the athletic department were cited for failure to recognize those actions as violations.

Penalties include a reduction in total and initial football scholarships by three for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years; $18,500 self-imposed fine; indefinite suspension of the boosters, and three years of probation, beginning Friday and ending on April 26, 2015.
