Charm Square Twirly Skirt & Creative @ Home Link-Up Party #1 ...

Don?t forget to join in the Creative @ Home Link-Up Party! To find it, simply scroll down to the bottom of this post!

The other day I was looking through my box of charm squares and I was inspired to make a skirt. I just love the Boho look and I envisioned to make something cute and stylish. I started looking around the web for inspiration and ran across a skirt with the waist made out of the top part of a pair of jeans. Then the gears really started working?lol! So I decided to design a Boho inspired skirt with the top of the jeans and a skirt made out of the charm squares. So to design the skirt I envisioned, I first needed to do a little math?did I mention that I REALLY dislike math?lol! Since I?ve already got the formula worked out, I of course, am going to share it with you so you too, can make one of these CUTE skirts!

Supplies:

  • An old pair of jeans or pants that you don?t mind cutting apart. I picked up mine at a garage sale for $1.
  • Charm squares or any 5 inch squares. You will need to have quite a few, when you do the math portion of this project you?ll know exactly how many.
  • sewing thread
  • sewing machine
  • pins (lots of them for the gathering of the ruffles)
  • scissors and other basic sewing supplies.

STEP 1:

The first thing you will do is cut off the top of the jeans about 1 inch below the end of the zipper.? Make sure you pull the pockets to the outside so you don?t accidentally cut them.? I like my skirts to have pockets :-) .

Now you have the yoke or top part of your skirt (or a REALLY short mini skirt?I don?t recommend that!).

STEP 2:

Next you want to measure across the bottom of the yoke folded and then double that number.? This will give you the approximate width of the bottom opening.

In this instance, the opening was about 42 inches.? Write that number down, you?ll need it later.

MATH STEP 1 (for first ruffle):

The next step involves math, so grab your homeschooling child and make them do it for you?.call it their math class for the day.? Or, do it yourself if said child is not available :-) .

This skirt requires 3 tiers/ruffles.? Each tier/ruffle is made up out of 2 rows of the same number of charm squares.? Now charm squares are 5 inches square.? If you use a 1/2 inch seam allowance then the charm squares, once sewn will be 4 inches square.? Is that clear as mud???? So to figure out the number of charm squares you will need for this project you will need to use the 4 inch square measurement.

So you remember that measurement I had you write down?mine was 42 inches.? Now you are going to take that number and multiply it by 1.5.? For me that is 63 inches.? So my first tier/ruffle will need to be 63 inches long.? So to find out how? many charm squares I will need, I will divide the 63 inches by 4 (the size of the charm square with the seam allowance).? That gives me 15.75, so I round up to 16. A total of 32 charm squares for this ruffle to be completed.

Now, to make the first tier/ruffle,? layout 2 rows of 16 charm squares.

STEP 3:

Sew the first row of 16 together and then sew the second row of 16 together.

STEP 4:

Then sew the 2 strips of 16 together length wise.

STEP 5:

Next, you will want to sew together the 2 short ends of your tier/ruffle to form a tube.? Then the first ruffle is finished and ready to attach.? BE? SURE YOU DON?T HAVE THEM TWISTED. This could be easy to do on the longer ruffle pieces!

MATH STEP 2 (for second ruffle):

Now we know the length of the first ruffle, mine was 63 inches.? For the second ruffle you want to multiply the length of the first ruffle by 1.5.? For example mine came to 94.5, so rounded up to 95.? Then to figure out the number of charm squares, I divided 95 by 4 which came to 23.75.? Again I rounded up to 24.? So each row of ruffle two will need 24 charm squares.? This is a total of 48 charm squares to complete the ruffle.

Now, to make the second tier/ruffle,? layout 2 rows of 24 charm squares. Then follow steps 3, 4, and 5 from the first ruffle.

MATH STEP 3 (for third ruffle):

Okay the length of the second ruffle is 95.? For the third ruffle you want to multiply 95 by 1.5.? For example, mine came to 142.5, so I rounded up to 143.? Then to figure out the number of charm squares needed for ruffle 3, I took 143 and divided by 4.? This came to 35.74, so I rounded up to 36. So for each row of ruffle three, I will need 36 charm squares for a total of 72 charm squares.

Now, to make the third tier/ruffle,? layout 2 rows of 36 charm squares. Then follow steps 3, 4, and 5 from the first ruffle.

Okay, you?re done with the math portion of this tutorial?YAY!!!? Now to assemble your skirt!

STEP 6:

Now you will begin to assemble the skirt.

Gather ruffle #1 to the bottom of the jean yoke of the skirt.? Then using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, sew together.

STEP 7:?

Gather ruffle #2 to the bottom of ruffle #1.? Then using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, sew together.

STEP 8:

Gather ruffle #3 to the bottom of ruffle #2.? Then using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, sew together.

STEP 9:

The last step is to put in the 1/2 inch hem.? You can do your hem however you normally do it.? I simply zig-zag closely around the raw edge at the bottom of the skirt, turn under 1/2 inch and sew down.? This works for me, but I know some will prefer to do a rolled hem.? Whatever works best for you :-) ? Now your skirt is complete and ready to wear!? Isn?t it adorable!
