Trouble in the Eastlands

Varnathus is a country in the middle of the large and unstable region of Terra known as the Eastlands. Torn by generations of wars and civil strife, the Eastlands have suffered heavily over the years. Preying upon a people weary from the loss of their sons and daughters to meaningless wars and trivial disputes, Varnathus has risen to the forefront of the dominant countries. Its Emperor, a ruthless man, seeks to unify the countries of the Eastlands under his iron first. But to do so, he first must unify them against a common enemy, a scapegoat for all the ills that have befallen its people. In a massive cultural revolution, the country of Varnathus has seen to the outlawing of magic and non human species.

For every organized body of oppression there is a body of hope, however. In the Eastlands this has taken the form of scatterings of resistance groups fighting for the freedom of its people. Made up from any man, woman or child willing to stand up against the growing might of Varnathus and its neighbours these pockets of resistance are made up from all species, and all walks of life. For as many battles as they fight in trying to hold back the tide of persecution they must also support as many refugee camps as more and more people flee to the milder northern regions with their homes burning behind them. In the midst of this tension bandits, criminals and the unscrupulus are thriving as they snatch at the remains of the wartorn region. The Eastlands are in a state of chaos, ad the turmoil shows no signs of abateing."

As suggested above this roleplay will follow the escalating trouble in the Eastlands, for the moment focusing on the country known as Varnathus and its surrounding area. The country openly persecutes non-humans and magic users and has begun a successful and steady push northwards swallowing up more ground, and either killing or dislocating the former inhabitants. The resistance groups are attempting to scratch out a survival in the milder Northern regions of the Eastlands and mounting operations towards the south with varying degrees of success. Other groups swim around in the middle of this mess with no concrete alleigeance.

There is no distinct plotline for this region. Instead it will be made up of a mesh of smaller, co-dependent storylines that will weave together to create a larger tapestry of events. As we go further along this path the events in which characters find themselves with escalate in terms of importance, and scope. Storylines will then not only affect a small group of characters but entire swathes of land; at some point, even the fate of both the resistance groups and Varnathus. The future of the entire Eastlands could be decided through your efforts. Though each character may start simply being carried along by the momentum of either side they will have the chance to swim to the surface and take control of what is happening around them - for better, or for worse. Players in this roleplay are free to come in on any side of the struggle. The leading members of any of these groups are currently unknowns; unplayed NPC's over which no player has control. The characters that we create will all start at the lower end of the spectrum. They will not know these key figures and will not be able to influence them personally. They will also not be important enough to influence policy in a region on a larger, or more general, style. The impact of each character will have to build significance and import through action via roleplaying. Characters will have the chance to climb ladders and to become more pivotal the more they participate in events. As with all real stories of this kind; we start from the bottom and work our way up.

This story will have its characters split into three groups: Varnathus [V], Resistance [R] and Independents [I].

Varnathus:
This group will focus on the people who support the country of Varnathus in its exploits to rid the Eastlands of magic and non-human species. The characters in this group can fill any desired social role within the country from soldier to blacksmith, although it should be kept in mind that all characters are low-tier and key or influential characters are restricted.

The Resistance:
Tthis group will focus on those people who are actively trying to thwart the goals of Varnathus by aiding magic users and non-human species. The characters in this group can fill any desired social role from across Valore, and can also be of any race or magical school. Humans can still be sympathizers with the resistance groups, including those native to the region. It should be kept in mind that all characters are low-tier and key or influential characters are restricted.

Independents:
This group will include any characters who are linked to these groups through whatevers means. Members of this group can hold any personal view on what is happening and work to support either, both or neither of the main groups. Characters in this group may fill any role they choose, but should be kept low-tier and not be key or influential characters in any major region. They are free to dip in and out of major events as nessacary and to shape the course of things through their own actions as independents.

Storylines and Quests

Submit your storylines and quests and I'll track them here. Players are responsible for the running of their own storylines. I will simply act as a log holder and help different groups co-ordinate together to achieve 'larger' events. Until everyone is on there feet, I'll also organize the mass-member events.

1. Aet, An End and a Beginning - As tension grows in the Eastlands the nation of Varnathus grows bolder in its movements. Word has reached Captain Mateja (played by Vyral) of a town on the outskirts of the country that openly sympathizes with the resistance. Unable to take the risk that this attitude will spread across the borders Captain Mateja has ordered a regiment to march to Aet and round up anyone suspected of being a resistance member. Whilst officially this means 'investigation and trial' in reality it means that suspects will be hung for all the townsfolk to see. Aet will be an example for any other towns thinking they are distant enough from the central cities to escape the rule of law. The village, Aet, in question will be the home of Faf du Plessis (played by TheFinalOne). Arthur Bradley (played by Flexar), Captain Mateja and Trystam (Played by Dragon) will all be attending the raid on the side of the oppressive nation of Varnathus.

2. On the Road - A group of unsavory bandits have been causing havoc across many regions of the Easlands, primarily targeting non-human species. Their butchery and terrifying actions have seperated their actions clearly from those of the armed forces. Resistance players are encouraged to and together to identify, find and put a stop to this group of bandits before they can commit any greater atrocities. The bandit leader is Milenka Veska (Played by Vyral). Note: This group will now be allowed to use very low-level magic. They will need to hide it from authorities, but it will allow more options for the bandits later in the roleplay.
